Knute Rockne Son Dies: Jack Rockne, 82, son of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, died this weekend at Sanctuary at Holy Cross in South Bend, of complications from cancer.
Rockne was five in 1931 when his father died in a plane crash.
Dayton Victim Beaten, Stabbed: The victim found buried in the backyard of 219 E. Dayton in South Bend this weekend was beaten with a blunt object, stabbed several times and had his throat cut according to an autopsy.
Two Michigan residents, Nathaniel Richerson and Matt Weidler, have been arrested in conjunction with the crime.

Reds Trade Dunn: The NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks picked up outfielder Adam Dunn, the National Leagues’ leading home run hitter, for a South Bend Silver Hawks’ pitcher and two players to be named.
Dunn is the second Reds’ outfielder to be traded this summer; Ken Griffey, Jr., went to the Chicago White Sox two weeks ago.
The Reds got right-handed pitcher Dallas Buck (1-4, 3.94 ERA) from the Hawks, one of Arizona’s Class A affiliates.

Phelps Ties Record: USA swimmer Michael Phelps tied the record for the most Olympic gold medals with a win in the 200-meter freestyle Tuesday.
He is 3-for-3 in gold medal attempts at this Olympiad; he led off the winning 400 free relay squad and captured the 400 individual medley.
Phelps’ nine medals tie him with USA swimmer Mark Spitz, USA sprinter Carl Lewis, Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina, and Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi.
Olympic Mom Upgraded: The condition of Barbara Bachman has been upgraded from serious to stable.
Mrs. Bachman, mother of 2004 Olympic volleyball Elisabeth Bachman McCutcheon, was stabbed along with her husband Todd at the Drum Tower, a popular Beijing tourist spot. The assailant leaped to his death from the 130-foot tower. Mr. Bachman also died.
Elisabeth McCutcheon is married to USA men’s volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon.

Two Arrested in Murder Probe: Michigan residents Nathaniel Richerson, 19, and Matt Weidler, 27, have been arrested in connection with the discovery of a (unnamed) resident’s body at 219 E. Dayton Street in South Bend this weekend.
The resident was discovered missing during a welfare check Friday and a missing persons report was filed. Police found the body buried in the back yard of the residence Saturday.
Richerson has been charged with murder and Weidler with assisting a criminal

Olympic Parents Stabbed; Father Killed: The father and mother-in-law of Olympic men’s volleyball coach Herb McCutcheon were stabbed in Beijing this weekend.
Mr. Bachman was killed; Mrs. Bachman’s condition has been upgraded to serious.
The assailant jumped 130 feet to his death; no motive was given for the attack.
The Bachmans are the parents of 2004 Olympic women’s volleyball player Elisabeth (Bachman) McCutcheon.
Bernie Mac Dead: Chicago comedian/actor Bernie Mac, 50, died Saturday in Northwestern Memorial Hospital from complications due to pneumonia. He had been a patient at the hospital for several weeks.
Mac was the star of “The Bernie Mac Show” on Fox from 2001-2006. He starred in 27 films, including “Mo’ Money,” “Ocean’s Eleven,”, and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.”
He was a member of “The Original Kings of Comedy” with Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, and D.L. Hughley.
Ironically his last film appearance was in the soon-to-be-released “Soul Men” with the late Isaac Hayes, who also died this past weekend.
Isaac Hayes Dead: Actor/singer Isaac Hayes, 65, died Sunday at a hospital in Memphis. He had been taken there after being found unconscious in his home.
Hayes won several Grammies; he also received an Oscar for the 1971 “Shaft” movie theme.
Among the movies he appeared in were: “Tough Guys;” “I’m Gonna Get You, Sucka;” “Hustle and Flow;” and “Flipper.” He also provided the voice for the school cook on the animated “South Park” series.

Lugnuts 3, Silver Hawks 1: The host Silver Hawks 28-17 saw their lead over the third-place Lugnuts shrink to three games. They maintained a 2-game margin over second-place Dayton.
The Hawks lost a scoring opportunity when a line-drive single hit an umpire. The batter was awarded first place but the runners at second and third had to remain on their bases where they were stranded.
Sean Coughlin and Collin Cowgill had two hits each. Cowgill led off the third with a single, advanced to second on a single by Coughlin, and stole third. He was stranded when Chance Wheeless struck out to end the inning.
Cowgill scored South Bend’s only run in the seventh when he led off with a triple and scored on a single by Taylor Harbin.

More Unrest in Africa: There is more political unrest in Africa, but it is on the western coast, not the eastern where CFH Executive Assistant Emily Pickerell will be living.
Of course there was already political unrest in Kenya earlier this year and it continues in Zimbabwe after the ruling party stole the presidential election.
The new unrest is in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. It is in northwest Africa, bordered by Western Sahara (the country, not the desert), Algeria, Mali, Senegal, and the Atlantic Ocean.
The first democratically-elected Mauritanian president in many years has been overthrown by the military after he fired four generals.
This happened in the United States recently—except for the military coup part.
The Secretary of the Navy—not the president or the Secretary of Defense—fired the commander and executive officer of the nuclear aircraft carrier George Washington after a careless sailor did millions of dollars of smoke damage to the ship with a cigarette.
You could argue the fairness of that decision. A nuclear carrier is a large vessel, there are many layers in the chain of command between the top two officers and the average sailor, and that sailor undoubtedly knew the rules.
Irregardless of the fairness of the secretary’s decision, the military did not see fit to overthrow our government. Our generals and admirals know their place.
Tough Choice for TV Watchers: TV watchers tonight will have a tough choice, unless they don’t like sports. The Bears are playing a preseason game on channel 22 and the Cubs are playing the Tigers on channel 69.
The winner of “So You Think You Can Dance” will be announced on Fox 28. Smallville is a rerun; Kara (Supergirl) is still trapped in the Phantom Zone.

In addition to Emily’s administrative duties, she supervised the planting at the garden north of the CFH buildings and in the planters on the sidewalk. She also edited the CFH Artistic Newsletter.
Emily’s last day at CFH will be Friday, August 22.

Newman Leaving Penske: South Bend native Ryan Newman has confirmed that he is leaving the Penske Sprint Cup Racing Team at the end of this season.
Newman began the season with a win at the Daytona 500, but has had few top 10 finishes since then and has sunk to 15th place in the Sprint Cup standings.
Newman is reportedly talking to fellow Indiana native Tony Stewart about joining the latter's new Sprint Cup racing team.
Skip Caray Dies: Long-time Braves' broadcaster Skip Caray, 68, died in his Atlanta home Sunday. He had suffered from several ailments in the last year but continued to broadcast Braves game until his death.
Caray is the son and father, respectively, of broadcasters Harry and Chip Caray.

Solzhenitsyn Dead: Alexander Solzhenitsyn, author of The Gulag Archipelago and One Day In the Life Of Ivan Denisovich, died of heart failure Sunday at his home near Moscow. He was 89.
Solzhenitsyn spent 20 years in exile before the fall of the Soviet Union.

Newman Leaving Penske: South Bend native Ryan Newman has confirmed that he is leaving the Penske Sprint Cup Racing Team at the end of this season.
Newman began the season with a win at the Daytona 500, but has had few top 10 finishes since then and has sunk to 15th place in the Sprint Cup standings.
Newman is reportedly talking to fellow Indiana native Tony Stewart about joining the latter's new Sprint Cup racing team.
Skip Caray Dies: Long-time Braves' broadcaster Skip Caray, 68, died in his Atlanta home Sunday. He had suffered from several ailments in the last year but continued to broadcast Braves game until his death.
Caray is the son and father, respectively, of broadcasters Harry and Chip Caray.

Uncle Ron’s Ramblings
Politics Not Ideal: I mentioned yesterday that in an ideal world John McCain’s choice of running mate would be a no-brainer: Condoleeza Rice.
Actually in an ideal world the second spot of the respective tickets would go to the second-leading vote-getters: Hillary Clinton for the Democrats and Mitt Romney for the Republicans.
That’s the way the Founding Fathers originally intended. In fact, in the first presidential elections the top two spots went to the leading vote-getters regardless of party.
Naysayers might also point out that McCain would alienate many potential GOP voters by putting an African-American on the ticket. If so, who would they vote for: Barack Obama?
McCain needs to do something to shake things up. According to the latest polls the election is Obama’s to lose; he leads McCain by 11%.
In one sense, third world countries like Zimbabwe or third world cities like Chicago (just kidding) have the right idea.
In Chicago the Republican Party became so irrelevant that city leaders decided to put all municipal candidates on one ballot. If one candidate doesn’t get a majority of the votes the top two candidates meet in a run-off.
That’s the way it was supposed to work under Zimbabwe’s constitution but supporters of incumbent President Robert Mugabe used threats, intimidation, and censorship to force Morgan Tsvangirai to drop out of the scheduled run-off; the 28-year-old wife of an opposition party mayor was kidnapped and murdered. This was after Tsvangirai received 49% of the vote in the general election.

Silver Hawks 11, Lumberkings 1: Centerfielder Winston Linton and rightfielder Joseph Batten each had four hits and scored three runs as the Hawk bats came alive after two straight shutouts. One of Batten’s hits was a solo homer.
Matthew Oxendine had three hits; Taylor Harbin had two hits and four RBIs; Collin Cowgill and Ramon Ramirez had two hits apiece.
Starting pitcher Jarrod (10-5) picked up the win with six innings of work, two hits allowed, one run (earned), four walks, and six strikeouts. Bryan Shaw and Jordan Norberto didn’t allow a run or hit in two and one inning of work, respectively.
