Barack Goes For Experience In Picking Biden: First-term senator and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama went for experience in choosing a running mate: Six-term Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware.

Biden was first elected to the Senate in 1973 at the age of 30. He is currently Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee (1987-95). He still serves on the Judiciary Committee.

Biden, the longest-serving senator in Delaware history, ran for president in 1998 and 2008.

Like Obama, he has no executive experience.

JoJo Batten hit his sixth homer and third in as many games; Matt Oxendine had three hits.

The Silver Hawks (37-22) lead Dayton and Lansing by five games.

Clay Zavada set the side down in order in the ninth for his seventh save and improved his ERA to 0.64.

SBCSC Board To Pass Buck: The South Bend Community School Corporation Board of Trustees has decided to start a national search for Superintendent Robert Zimmerman’s re-placement, but defer the decision to the next Board.
The board recently settled with Zimmerman on a contract buyout. James Kapsa, former Jefferson Intermediate School principal, is the acting superintendent.

U.S. Rep. Tubbs Jones Dies: U.S. Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio), 58, died Wednesday of a brain hemorrhage.
Tubbs Jones was the first African-American woman to represent an Ohio district and the first to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee. She was also the chairman of the House ethics committee.

Hawks 3, Whitecaps 0: The Hawks (36-21) increased their lead to 4 1/2 games over the second-place Lansing Lugnuts and five games over the third-place Dayton Dragons. Their magic number to clinch is six with 13 games left.

Joe Batten hit a 2-run homer in the eighth inning.

Bryan Henry, normally a reliever, pitched five innings and scattered six hits for the win. Clay Zavada (S 6) improved his ERA to .067 in 18 appearances with 42 strikeouts to only five walks.

Shawn Edges “Nasty” For Gold: Shawn Johnson of the USA, the 2004 Olympic Women’s All-Around Gymnastics Champion, finally won a gold in this Olympics.

Johnson edged teammate Nastia Lukin for gold in the balance beam today. Johnson now has one gold and two silvers at Beijing.

Lukin’s medal was her fifth in this Olympics. She has a gold in the all-around, three silvers, and a bronze.

The two women also earned silver medals in the team competition.

Bears Name Orton Starter: The Chicago Bears have named Purdue graduate Kyle Orton as their starting quarterback for the 2008 season.

Orton, a fourth-year player, will start the last exhibition and the season opener against the Colts.

Orton had been alternating starts during the exhibition with former starter Rex Grossman.

Maddux To Dodgers: The Padres have reportedly agreed to a trade that would send 353-game winner Greg Maddux to the Dodgers. There was no word on what the Padres would receive in return.

It would be the second time the 42-year-old right-hander is traded to the Dodgers. He was traded by the Cubs to LA two years ago.

Maddux was 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA in 26 starts this season for the Padres.

Obama Reportedly Close To Announcing VP Choice: Illinois Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has reportedly settled on a choice for his running mate.

He could make the announcement as early as tomorrow, according to aides.

Obama has reportedly narrowed the list of candidates down to Indiana Senator Evan Bayh, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, and Delaware Senator Joseph Biden.

Obama has had less time to select a vp than presumptive Republican nominee John McCain. He did not want to start vetting candidates until Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton dropped out of the race in June.

Phelps’ Breaks Another Spitz Record: USA swimmer Michael Phelps broke another long-standing record with his eighth gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. The previous mark was seven by swimmer Mark Spitz of the USA.

Phelps raised his record total to 14 golds. He broke world records in four of the five individual events he competed in and his three relay teams set world marks.

Venus-Serena Win Doubles Gold: Venus and Serena Williams of the USA won the Olympic Tennis Doubles Gold Medal, beating Anabel Medina-Virginia Ruano (Spain) 6-2, 6-0.

Luken Gets Fourth Medal: Nastia Luken of the USA won her fourth Olympic Gymnastics medal with a silver in the uneven bars. China’s He Kexin took the gold.

Luken and He got identical scores in the event but He was awarded the gold on a tiebreaker.

Luken now has a gold medal in the all-around, two silver medals, and a bronze.

The USA’s Shawn Johnson has three silver medals in women’s gymnastics.

Pakistani President Resigns: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf resigned today rather than face impeachment. He said an im-peachment battle would harm the nation.

Musharraf first seized power in 1999 when he overthrew Nawaz Sharif. Sharif had named Musharraf army chief of staff and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff.

Musharraf later persuaded Pakistan’s president to step down but he held on to the jobs of chairman of the joint chiefs and prime minister in violation of the Pakistani constitution.

Musharraf was “reelected” twice by Parliaments that he controlled.

Russian Troops Withdrawing: Russian troops are beginning to withdraw from the neighboring Republic of Georgia but will remain in the breakaway Georgian provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, according to the Russian government.

Nepal Swears in New Prime Minister: Maoist leader Prachanda was sworn in as prime minister of the new Republic of Nepal today. Prachanda led the fight to overthrow Nepal’s 240-year-old Hindu monarchy.

Dayton Victim Identified: The man found murdered and buried in the backyard of his 219 E. Dayton residence has been identified as Randy Guyberson, 58.

Guyberson, a former chef living on disability, moved to South Bend from Plymouth 10 years ago.

Guyberson was reportedly letting the man charged with murder in the case, 19-year-old Nathaniel Richerson,, stay at the house.

Silver Hawks 6, Whitecaps 2: Matt Oxendine and Elijah Rumler has three hits each for the visiting Hawks.

Oxendine doubled and scored in the seventh and had a 2-run single in the fourth. Rumler scored two runs. Hawk outfielders Winston Linton and Collin Cowgill had two hits each.

The Hawks (32-19) maintain a 3-game lead over the second-place Lansing Lugnuts.

Phelps Adds 10 and 11 to Record Gold Total: USA swimmer Michael Phelps broke the record for the most Olympic gold medals with wins in the 200-meter butterfly and 4x200 freestyle relay Wednesday.

Phelps swam the opening leg of the relay race.

He is 5-for-5 in gold medal attempts at this Olympiad; he led off the winning 400 free relay squad and captured the 400 individual medley to tie USA swimmer Mark Spitz, USA sprinter Carl Lewis, Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina, and Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi.

“Ol’ Perv’” Headed For Retirement?: It’s ironic that while helping to install democratic governments in Iraq and Afghanistan that one of our chief allies is a man who instigated the overthrow of his country’s government.

Pervez Musharraf was Pakistan’s top general when he ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and took over the position.

Sharif had been under investigation for corruption but that is a matter for the Pakistani legal system and president to deal with. (The role of Pakistan’s president is largely ceremonial but he—or she--can fire the prime minister).

I should say the role of Pakistan’s president was largely ceremonial. Two years after taking over the prime minister’s job, Ol’ Perv’ respectfully suggested to the president that the honorable gentleman might want to consider early retirement. After giving it some thought, the president agreed that might be a good idea.

Ol’ Perv’ did not give up his jobs as general-in-chief or prime minister upon assuming the presidency. He held on to them, in the same way Adolf Hitler combined the jobs of chancellor and president upon the death of German President Hindenburg. One difference between the Fuehrer and Ol’ Perv’ is that Hindenburg had appointed Hitler chancellor when the Nazi Party won the most seats in the Reichstag.

When the Pakistani Supreme Court finally stood up to Ol’ Perv’ he fired the justices. Now a democratically-elected prime minister and Parliament are trying to impeach him.

To add insult to injury, Ol’ Perv’s former interior minister has joined those calling for his ouster.
