Zimbabwe Security Members Forced to Vote for Mugabe: Members of Zimbabwe’s police force, military, and prison service—100,000 in all—are being forced to vote for President Robert Mugabe ahead of the June 27 presidential run-off.

Senior department officials supervised police officer voting in Harare Wednesday. Officers were forced to mark their postal ballots in front of the supervisors before they placed them into envelopes.

Morgan Tsvangirai, who outpolled Mugabe 48%-43% in the general election, rejected advice to pull out of the run-off and vowed to press ahead with his campaign. Under Zimbabwean law, a presidential candidate must get at least 50% of the vote.

Mugabe’s supporters have carried out acts of intimidation—including murder—and the government has thrown obstacles in the way of Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Police have barred MDC campaign rallies and Tsvangirai has been detained five times.

Tsvangirai’s number two, Tendai Biti, was arrested June 12 following a long stay in South Africa. He was formally charged with treason yesterday—a capital offense.

Mugabe has said that he is ready to fight to keep the opposition from coming to power.

CFH Guest Shot at East Race: CFH guest Ron Miller was shot in the arm while sitting at the East Race yesterday.

Ron and one of two teenagers struggled over his bicycle; the 17-year-old pulled a .38 revolver and shot him, wounding him in the wrist.

“It doesn’t make any sense to us why someone would resort to that level of violence over a bicycle,” said South Bend Police Captain Phil Trent.

The teens—the alleged shooter and a 14-year-old--were arrested after a short chase and indentified by a witness. They left their bicycle and Ron’s.

Ron’s injuries were treated at the hospital and he was back at CFH the same night.

Reports of Fraudulent Ban Withdrawals: Reports of fraudulent bank withdrawals have been flooding in to local police departments Monday and Tuesday.

A Teacher’s Credit Union spokesperson said about 150 of their 200,000 members reported money missing over the last 48 hours.

One bank customer reported his account went from a positive to a negative balance when someone at an ATM in Lagos, Nigeria withdrew $300 from it.

The accounts of theft varied from withdrawals of a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. The vast majority of them came from ATM’s or debit card transactions posted in Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine or Spain.

The list of financial institutions affected includes: Notre Dame Federal Credit Union, KeyBank, Teacher’s Credit Union, Michian’s Finest Bank, Elkhart County Farm Bureau Credit Union, E-Trade Financial, Chiphone Federal Credit Union.

Police aren’t sure yet how the banks’ security was breached.

Notre Dame Federal Credit Union is blocking transactions originating in Nigeria, Russia, or Ukraine and is taking steps to replace cards that may have been compromised.

The best way to protect yourself from fraud is by checking your accounts regularly, and calling your financial institution when you notice money is missing. You should follow up in writing by sending a certified letter, so you can prove when the institution received it. Be sure to keep a copy of the letter for your records.

By law, customers have 60 days from the date their bank account statement is sent to report any money taken from an account without permission.

NBA Finals; Celtics 131, Lakers 92: Well, the Lakers can always say that at least they won championships in Minnesota—unlike Kevin Garnett—but that’s probably small consolation to the current group, most of whom likely never heard of George Mikan. Besides, Kevin Garnett is quite happy with the NBA championship he won with his new Boston teammates.

It was the Celtics 17th title and first in 22 years.

Garnett and Ray Allen—who was also a new addition to the team this season—scored 26 points apiece; Garnett also grabbed 14 rebounds. Paul Pierce, the finals MVP, added 17 despite playing with a sprained knee.

The 39-point margin surpassed the previous record set in game five of the 1965 NBA finals which featured the same two teams.

Regular season MVP Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 22 points.

The Celtic championship continues an in-credible year for Beantown and New England. The defending World Series champion Red Sox are in first place again, the Patriots came within a game of completing a perfect season, Boston College was ranked number one briefly in football and beat Notre Dame for the NCAA hockey championship.
