Advice For Sen. McCain: Since I gave advice on picking a running mate to presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama yesterday, it’s only fair that I give equal time to Republican John McCain.

The McCain headquarters claims this is just a get-together with friends and colleagues.
If it is a gathering of possible vice-presidential candidates, one name conspicuously absent from the list is that of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.
At least one pundit has said that it would be a cynical move to put the Secretary on the ticket. Actually, it would be cynical to reject someone with her experience simply because it might be interpreted as cynical. Politics, after all, is a cynical business and nobody knows that more than McCain, the veteran senator from
West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, former Ku Klux Klan (Tip O’Neil reportedly called him “Sheets”) member and opponent of civil rights legislation, recently endorsed the candidacy of Barack Obama. Has the 90-year-old senator truly had a change of heart or is he an astute politician.
The question is: Would the addition of Rice to the ticket help McCain’s chances in the general election or would it alienate a core Republican constituency?
