Lou Holtz Elected to Hall of Fame: Former Notre Dame head football coach Lou Holtz has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Holtz led the Irish to 100 wins ( his overall mark is 100-30-2) and the 1988 national championship in 11 seasons at Notre Dame. His 1988 and ‘89 teams won a school-record 23 in a row with quarterback Tony Rice. He is second in career wins to Knute Rockne. His 1993 team came within one point of another perfect season; they did beat top-ranked and eventual champion Florida State.

Holtz’ head coaching career included stints at William & Mary, North Carolina State, Arkansas, the New York Jets, University of Minnesota, ND, and South Carolina.

He took five different schools to a bowl game (his ’85 Minnesota team qualified as a sixth, but Holtz did not coach in the bowl game since he had accepted the Notre Dame job), won bowl games with four different teams and had four different schools ranked in the top 20 in the final poll. His 249-132-7 career record in 33 seasons ranked him third in victories among active coaches at the time of his retirement and eighth in winning percentage. His 12 career postseason bowl victories rank him fourth on the all-time list.

Holtz becomes the sixth former Irish coach inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; there are 42 players, the most recent being Chris Zorich in 2007. The 48 total inductees are the most of any NCAA institution.

Lou, Aikman Among Hall Class: Troy Aikman, Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon, and Lou Holtz highlight the 2008 class for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Joining Aikman, Cannon and Holtz for enshrinement will be Virginia offensive tackle Jim Dombrowski, Northwestern linebacker Pat Fitzgerald, Florida linebacker Wilber Marshall, Washington State running back Rueben Mayes, Arizona State guard Randall McDaniel, Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson, Wyoming tight end Jay Novacek, Texas Tech end Dave Parks, Florida State nose guard Ron Simmons, Oklahoma State running back Thurman Thomas, Army quarterback Arnold Tucker and coach John Cooper.

The 2008 College Football Hall of Fame class will be inducted at the 51^st annual awards dinner in December, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The players and coaches will be enshrined at the Hall of Fame in South Bend in July 2009.

Silver Hawks Begin Homestand: The Silver Hawks (7-18) will try to get back on the winning track after going 2-4 on their six-game road trip. They are back at the friendly confines of the Cove tonight to begin a 10-game homestand. South Bend swept its last three-game home series. Game time is 6:30 p.m.; the opponent is the Peoria Chiefs.

Big Brown is Derby Favorite: Big Brown has been listed as the 3-1 favorite for this Saturday’s 134^th Kentucky Derby after only three races.

Big Brown’s trainer, Richard Dutrow, has chosen to start from the extreme outside position in the 20-horse field, even though no colt has won from that spot since 1929. Dutrow said his colt needs clear running room.

No entry has won the Derby after only three races since the filly Regret in 1915.

Big Brown’s jockey, Kent Desormeaux, has ridden two Derby winners.

According to the oddsmakers, Big Brown’s leading challengers are Colonel John (4-1) and Pyro (6-1).

Post time for the race is 5:04 p.m., Saturday, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY.
