Boy Shot in Arm: An 11-year-old boy was hit in the arm by a stray bullet Thursday night at his home in the 900 block of West LaSalle Street on South Bend’s west side.

Police say the shot came from a nearby vacant lot where a fight had escalated into gunfire.

Police say the wound is relatively minor.

Silver Hawks 7, Whitecaps 3: Left fielder Michael Mee had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for the Silver Hawks (22-30).

The Hawks got two runs in the fourth on a lead-off double by Elijah Rumler and a single by Mee. Rumler scored on an error and Mee came home on a balk.

Mee scored again in the sixth when Chance Wheeless hit a home run to right field.

Mee drove in two runs with a single in the seventh.

The teams meet again tonight at 6:35 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Hawks return to the Cove Sunday to begin a four-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts. Game time Sunday is 1:30 p.m.

ND Linebacker to Transfer: Sophomore linebacker Aaron Nagel (6-1, 225 pounds; Lemont, IL.) has decided to transfer due to lack of playing time.

Nagel saw no action as a freshman and would have started the 2008 season as the number four inside linebacker.

Phoenix Robot Arm Operating After Delay: The NASA Phoenix Mars Lander is ready to go to work after a one-day delay due to a radio problem.

After taking pictures of everything visible from the lander, the Phoenix will use its robot arm to start digging in the red clay soil at the northern Martian polar ice cap.

Temperatures at the landing site reached a high of -22 degrees F. and a low of -112 degrees F.

The Phoenix landed on Mars Sunday.
