From Dr. Seuss to Presidential Politics: Since we talked about Dr. Seuss yesterday we'll switch to something really nonsensical today: the presidential race.
The major wire services have picked up the rumors that Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine is the winner in the Democratic veep sweepstakes. The rumor was announced yesterday in something called the Politico Website. I don't know how authoritative a source that is; I've never heard of it.
If the Virginia governor is Barack Obama's pick, that means the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has taken part of my advice. I advised him to select a former beltway lieutenant governor, Maryland's Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who lost her governor's race.
It's ironic that she's the only one of Joseph P. Kennedy I's children or grandchildren to lose a political race; she's also one of the few members of that family to keep herself free of scandal. You could say she is to the Kennedy family what Elizabeth is to the Windsor family. If Kathleen has been involved in scandalous behavior, at least she has been discreet about it. That in itself is an accomplish with the scrutiny her family is under.
The choice of Kennedy-Townsend would have also offered an olive branch to the Hillary Clinton camp since the former lieutenant governor was almost the only member of her extended family not to support Obama.
Kaine does have the support of Clinton campaign manager Terry McCauliffe, who said the Virginia governor would be the best Democratic veep pick.
Maryland and Virginia are both swing states that have elected Democratic and Republican governors in the past decade.
If this was an ideal world, I still say McCain's choice would be a no-brainer: Condoleeza Rice. Who else has her experience dealing with Congress and world leaders?
If not Rice, my next choice would be J.C. Watts. The former college and CFL quarterback and U.S. Representative from Oklahoma has stayed busy finding and recruiting Republican candidates for local elections. Watts is still relatively young and he is one of the outstanding speakers in the Republican Party.
To those who say picking a candidate to achieve racial or gender balance is cynical I answer that politics is a cynical business. It's no more cynical than picking a candidate to achieve regional balance. Why not just pick the best available candidate?

St. Joseph County 4-H Fair Open: The St. Joseph County 4-H Fair is open until Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. The midway opens at 1 p.m.
The fairgrounds are at Ironwood and Jackson Roads. The entrance is south of Jackson Road on York Road.
Admission is $6 today through Thursday and $7 Friday and Saturday. Children 8 and under are admitted free; $5 for seniors (65 and over).
